Generic Lyrica is a trade name for Pregabalin. Lyrica (pregabalin) is an anti-epileptic drug, also called an anticonvulsant. LYRICA Pregabalin is indicated for the treatment of pain from damaged nerves (neuropathic pain) due to diabetes, post-herpetic neuralgia (pain after shingles), and adjunctive therapy in adults with partial seizures with or without secondary generalization. Recent studies have shown that Pregabalin Lyrica is effective at treating chronic pain in disorders such as fibromyalgia (pain all over your body) and spinal cord injury. The European Union also approved Lyrica to treat generalized anxiety disorder. Pregabalin became the first medicine approved by U.S. FDA specifically for the treatment of fibromyalgia.

How does Lyrica work?

Lyrica capsules contain the active ingredient pregabalin, which is a medicine that is mainly used to treat epilepsy. It works by stabilising electrical activity in the brain. Pregabalin prevents epileptic fits by preventing the excessive electrical activity in the brain. It does this by mimicking the activity of a neurotransmitter called GABA. Pregabalin is used as an add-on treatment for adults whose epilepsy has not been well controlled by other anti-epileptic medicines. It is used to prevent partial seizures, and partial seizures that spread to secondary generalised seizures. As pregabalin stabilises electrical nerve activity, it can also be used to treat pain that occurs a result of damage to or a disturbance in the function of nerves (neuropathic pain). It can be used for peripheral neuropathic pain, ie nerve pain in the hands, legs or feet, or central neuropathic pain, eg as a result of a spinal cord injury.

Lyrica Generic Precautions

You may get drowsy or dizzy while using pregabalin. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how pregabalin affects you. To reduce dizzy or fainting spells, do not sit or stand up quickly, especially if you are an older patient. Alcohol can increase drowsiness and dizziness. Avoid alcoholic drinks. If you have a heart condition, such as congestive heart failure, and notice that you are retaining water edema and have swelling in your hands or feet, contact your health care provider immediately.

Lyrica Generic Interaction

Alcohol and drugs that cause sedation may increase the sedative effects of pregabalin. Combining pregabalin with Pioglitazone Actos and rosiglitazone Avandia drugs may increase the occurrence of weight gain and fluid retention and possibly heart failure. Important pharmacokinetic interactions would also not be expected to occur between LYRICA and commonly used antiepileptic drugs. In vitro and in vivo studies showed that LYRICA is unlikely to be involved in significant pharmacokinetic drug interactions. Specifically, there are no pharmacokinetic interactions between pregabalin and the following antiepileptic drugs: Carbamazepine, valproic acid, lamotrigine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, and topiramate.
